Peeking down Park Avenue on Upper East Side in Manhattan

Busy weekend !

We partook in the 37th annual salmon BBQ-a University of Washington alumni event in Chappaqua. Was great to take a day off , enjoying a summer weekend and simply gorgeous grounds- we didn't partake of swimming or tennis, but I did relax poolside before our food was served. Gracious hosts, wonderful university staff , alums and their spouses , significant others and siblings ! We event watched the World Cup game in the cabana - thanks to my Sprint Mifi (which to me still rocks - one of the coolest gadgets ! ) they were able to stream the game on a laptop and connect it to a TV) - it had been thought it was wired for net access...but ....

A relaxing Saturday and then a busy real estate Sunday. One open house- for a fabulous luxury condo- over 3000sf internal space and over 1400sf wrap terrace ! And then off to the office, for a bit of quiet desk work, prepping for a short but busy week ahead , and more client searches for some rental clients !

And that view of the Met Life - one of my favorites. In the past two days I've been along the northern part of park avenue , while riding the Metro North Train (which emerges at 97th and park avenue) then to be walking in the heart of the Upper East side, to think that just a few blocks away you are approaching the heart of midtown commerce. To think that a few blocks away there was to have been an auction at the Roosevelt Hotel for the M127 condos- anxiously await reading how that went.....

Just another weekend in the city . Attempting to balance personal life and professional life. Til the next time. Always at your service .

Midtown Manhattan Monday Maltese Madness !

Yesterday felt like Maltese Monday. Of course for me everyday is Maltese day ,with my adorable dog Bentley (yes , I might be biased).

A quick detour in the evening and making time for a nice early dinner out.

Travelled down from the office to Midtown, to Salon Amici on 50th street- was nice to catch up- with the owner as well as my S/O finally got his haircut. (the owner and the staff are great, and as it turns out she's been at her location for just over four years, he started going there regularly just after she opened- they do wonderful work for men and women-a great salon ! )

My second Maltese of the day, a cute lil puppy of only seven weeks ! :) Brought back memories ,of my first days w/Mr B.

Cut done, dinner time ! So we mused , Pescatore or Lasagna. So then we mosied across the street to one of our favorite go to restaurants- Lasagna Ristorante - over the years, never a bad meal- HUGE portions when you're ordering lasagna, but boy is it worth it. Last night I tried the crab meat lasagna w/ light cream sauce delish ! (they recently renovated, we love the new look, and still love the food, and try to enjoy it often - if you're in the area and haven't been, go ! And if you're not , you should make a trip too !)

And then K realised he forgot my See's Lollipops from his last west coast trip, (I'm a bit more perceptive and noticed the minute I walked into the salon they weren't in his briefcase !) so we went downtown to his office to pick them up (my one condition, I forgot to eat dessert, so why not go to Ferrara for a cannoli ? :) its quite literally a hop skip and jump from his office ).

Off we went to the subway, and you guessed it, heading downtown, we saw not one but two Maltese dogs, same subway car !

Get off the subway walking towards Grand Street and another Maltese.,pick up the lollipops and then his phone rang ! Usually I'm the one still working at a computer after 9p !

And then off we went on the quest for dessert ! Acquired, and off we go home , and finally, as Bentley would say, to the Maltese who matters most to us :) (home before the 11p news !)

One of the best parts about living and working in Manhattan, no matter where you are, easy to get around and criss cross multiple neighborhoods in one day, and make any night a fun night in the city !

Happy Father's Day !

Wishing a very happy father's day to all the father's out there, and their fabulous kids.Have recently had family and friends lose their beloved fathers-and I truly believe this is a day to celebrate them, especially when they are no longer with us. Remember their laughter, their encouragement, their silly pranks, and know that they continue to live on in your hearts, and your memories.

Big Apple BBQ Festival AND Puerto Rican Day Parade and Fesitval-Festive Friday tips for weekend in Manhattan

New York City sometimes presents an overwhelming number of possibilities of things to do any day of the week, somehow that seems even MORE of an issue when the weekend comes along.

A few great options in Manhattan

If you like BBQ- this weekend (Saturday and Sunday, 11a-6p) is the 8th Big Apple BBQ block party. Recently featured on the Today show, as an event to consider planning a trip to NYC around, I often find in recent years that I plan this one weekend in June around it (as it also coincides with the annual reunion weekend festivities for LaGuardia Arts and its predecessor schools of which I am a proud alum ! )  Easiest way to get to the BBQ Street Party, take the 6 to 23rd Street or the N/R to 23rd. Be patient, lots of lines, but WELL worth the wait! Here is their website for more info: www.bigapplebbq.org

It’s at Madison Square Park in New York City (for those of you scratching your heads, wondering, that sounds an awful lot like Madison Square Garden- DING you are correct). There have been several Madison Square Gardens. The current one is on 8th Avenue, between 31st and 33rd Streets. The first two were at 26th and Madison Avenue. Madison Square Garden I (built in 1879 and closed in 1890) was actually the first indoor hockey rink in the United States. Madison Square Garden II (built in 1890 and closed in 1925), was designed by Stanford White, and also hosted the Democratic National Convention in 1924. The site is currently occupied by the New York Life Building, which was designed by Cass Gilbert, and completed in 1928.

There is a fabulous tour given every Sunday at 11a by the Flatiron Business Improvement District (http://flatironbid.org/tour.php ) I highly recommend it, and tours generally, I love exploring NYC and broadening my knowledge of my native town ! (I hope to even do some double-decker hop on/off tours this summer too !)  Sometimes you might discover a neighborhood you overlooked and say,gee I might want to live here ! J

Do you like parades, this weekend is also the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, on Sunday morning, starting at 11am, from 44th to 86th Streets along Fifth Avenue. Also, the day before the parade, there is a large street festival, with lots of live music and wonderful food, in East Harlem. Spanning from about 106th Street and Third Avenue, up to 124th Street or so .Lots of great stands (and restaurants along the way). And if you’re up in East Harlem, check out two of its museums on Museum Mile- El Museo del Barrio and The City Museum of New York.

Enjoy the weekend in the Big Apple !

'til the next time. Always at your service.

Travels to Tennessee - a bit about my experiences at Destination Imagination Global Finals in Knoxville #IDODI

The last few weeks,I have spent doing a lot of thinking,a lot of re-configuring (it can be argued that has been all of 2010 thus far)....but last week quite literally went on a journey...road trip from NYC to Knoxville,TN for Destination Imagination Global Finals. Destination Imagination is a creative problem solving organization-kids of various ages work on solutions, they present at various levels (local, regional, state) ,and Globals represents essentially, the best of the solutions presented around the country and world.

A week ago today,I was on the road,literally-traveling the journey with the person ,who I affectionately say "Kidnapped" me into DI (well to be precise he and his wife sort of kidnapped me into it,but I am grateful to them for it !)

The last two years,I've had a wonderful opportunity to do some volunteer work, with Destination Imagination here in NY. Trained to appraise challenges,in 2009 and 2010 I appraised at regional and affiliate (state) tournaments. And I've enjoyed every moment of it so far.

This year,I was nominated (and chosen) to be an appraiser at the Global Finals. So I blocked off the days on my calendar, with absolutely no idea what to expect. The experience was transformational, overwhelming  and exhausting but TOTALLY worth it  To be amongst so many, from all walks of life, from all over the country, and from as far away as Korea,Mexico,Guatemala,Brazil,Turkey- to name a few.

An environment,so many passionately and freely volunteer their time and energy.People taking time off from work,to come down and participate in this phenomenal event.Traveling great distances (my roomate was from Singapore,an expat, who had literally two days before just moved back to the US !).

Encountering children (and adults) who didn't speak English, but we had one thing in common, okay maybe two- DI and pins ! I had so much fun interacting with kids, some of whom knew few words of English beyond knowing that in New York City,we have the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State building. From the little girl, sitting alone away from all the kids pin trading, who I gave a pin to,which resulted in her (and myself) being in the middle of a pin trading bubble.

Having the opportunity to work side by side with a phenomenal team of appraisers from around the country, with the exception of one-who I had never met or worked with before.Meeting dozens,if not hundreds of new people throughout the days in Knoxville.

Being able to FINALLY meet someone face to face, who I've been interacting with on Twitter ( @IDODI ). Watching literally hundreds of kids, work together, creatively to present their solutions to the challenges this year. Getting to see that team that I saw present at regional and affiliate levels get 4th place in their division (the highest a NY team placed this year- special shout out to the team from Walter Panas HS).

Getting to meet children from around the world, including some really special kids from a phenomenal school in Turkey-who blew us away with their performance-truly transcended cultural and language barriers, and entertained all of us ! I may just have to watch that Turkish channel I'm sure is buried amongst the hundreds of my cable channels-these kids will surely be on some sort of show and become famous someday :).

I look forward to the upcoming year in NY and hope that next year I am fortunate enough to be selected to work Global Finals again. To see more of my photos from the days in Knoxville-check out my flickr stream and also You Tube for some video of a few teams,as well as tons of photos located on Facebook as well.

And now, back to "real life",where alot of great things are happening as well. But I returned to NYC with a renewed sense of optimism and hope, and a belief that we have to find more ways to engage and challenge kids,so that they learn and develop a broad range of skills, that hopefully will better prepare them to tackle the situations that will face them in our future.

I was very fortunate to have had a wide range of experiences growing up in New York City-getting to explore my academic interests,as well as artistic interests, and having friends from all walks of life.Even with that said,I wish I'd had the opportunity to participate in something like this-I would have loved it ! But,alas it is never too late, and I hope by giving of my time, energy and enthusiasm I can help keep something like this going, and maybe even bring it to others.

I highly recommend checking out the Destination Imagination programs where you are located, and if you're local to NYC ,and interested in possibly getting involved-DO email me and I'd be glad to tell you more about my experiences so far and connect you with the appropriate parties for more information as well.

'til the next time. Always at your service.
