Seemingly never ending stream of fun events in NYC- especially live music

Once upon a time, pre real estate, pre techie geekiness,I had aspirations of being a professional musician. My background is as a classically trained pianist and clarinettist.I even went to that famous school that had a show about it,and two movies since. I still ADORE music and the arts overall-not just my "native" classical music.

So,its Thursday, and the weekend approaches-and it is often when people feel more comfortable being out and about, perhaps a bit later than they might ordinarily.

My recommendations today ?

Well,I always recommend the fabulous Target Free Thursday events,at the Atrium at Lincoln Center ,without question-those generally start at 830PM,and the ones I've attended have been a blast-and there have even been some I couldn't get into because I didn't arrive early enough to get in !

But,tonight I also recommend a band playing at the Bitter End (down on Bleecker Street, smack dab in the neighborhood where I went to university....guess which one ? ). Come on out and check out Something Heavy tonight ! They don't play often-I heard them for the first time live,a few months ago-and I loved it !Full disclosure,I know one or more of the members-who I recently met at a dinner party ! I love to see people who are passionate about that which they do-be it their business,or an art or just about anything.

Check them out before hand if you like : www.reverbnation.com/somethingheavy or just come on out to the Bitter End ( 147 Bleecker Street) at 830PM ! I believe the cover charge is about $7. $5 if you are a FB fan of the band (go find them ! or find me on FB and I'll help you find them ;) )

Hope to see some of you there !

Friends always assume I eat out a lot in NYC (which I do)

But sometimes a quick home cooked meal is where its at-and I love to cook (and especially bake.....) Today was another super busy real estate day,so much so I apparently forgot to eat lunch ! Showings, meetings, showings, seminars.,discussions ....

I debated kicking off the Belgian shoes and heading to yoga-but knew that would likely mean take out /eating out. So decided to stay in- tonight's menu : spinach, ricotta, asiago, parm, mozz ravioli (store bought) with my homemade sauce, some sausage and fresh grated parmesean cheese. Total meal took about 30 mins to prepare/cook. I try to set up meals in advance so on nights like this I can cook. It takes about three hours for me to make my sauce- but I make enough to freeze for future use. I also enjoy convenience purchases so I can easily throw things together....

A glass of wine , Carmina Burana- and catching up on client emails and messages....maybe some reading- a few books in progress ....

How do you unwind after a hectic day ?

Til next time. Always at your service.

Memorial day is fast approaching....so what's your favorite summer activity in NYC ?

Last night, having a chat with my niece and sister,we started discussing one of our favorite things to do in the summer- we love to,if our schedules allow to take in street fairs and outdoor performances in NYC ! (I LOVE LOVE LOVE the concerts in the park, pick up a quick light dinner at Dean and Deluca and walk over into Central Park, for example....)A trio of born and bred Manhattanites, well two out of three of us are ....and this is part of what we enjoy doing for fun together.

Summer somewhat "officially" begins after Memorial Day for many people. Its when many beaches officially open for the season as well.

For me,one of the most interesting things about street fairs, besides the vendors is the food ! Being able to ,on foot, explore a neighborhood different from the one I live in,perhaps different from the one I work in-walking along, perusing some of the vendor wares-and often discovering stores I like in the process.

I'm looking forward to taking in some street fairs, maybe some walking tours, rediscovering some of my favorite museums, and hopefully meeting new people along the way.

You never know what you might find...maybe you'll find the right neighborhood for you,it suites your style...and all of that, from a street fair ! What are you waiting for, go for it !

How about you ?

Midtown Manhattan "frozen" waiting for Presidential Motorcade to go by...

OH : anywhere else people would be excited... In NYC we want it over with so we can get home.....

Marooned on the street corner we discussed amongst ourselves. Food ,wine, speaking and texting those on the other side of the barriers....

And then he went by ,as we all stood in front of or across from PJ Clarkes on 55thj and 3rd - and then the floodgates opened and everyone continued on walking , as if nothing had happened.

And off I continue walking ! (and yes got a quick glimpse)

Skip Lunch-Fight Hunger-help feed those less fortunate on May 12

If you've seen the ads on TV lately, you probably know what I'm talking about,if you don't here's a quick note.

Skip Lunch Fight Hunger,a pretty simple concept-started in 2002 by a City Harvest  board member- donate what you'd normally spend on lunch to help fight hunger in New York City.

For more information on how to participate- check out the website : www.skiplunch.org . (and check out the City Harvest website,a wonderful organization.)

But,I challenge you, find a way to help not just on May 12- unfortunately I come across people daily, who are asking for money,to buy food-I'm a big fan of buying them food,or taking left overs home from lunch/dinner and giving it to someone asking for any spare food or change to eat.

I know where my next meal comes from ,I know I have a place to call home-not everyone is so fortunate.

Take a minute,be thankful ,and help others.

'til the next time. Always at your service.

First Fabulous Friday of May in NYC ! How will you make it fun?

The weather has been wonderful the last few days-as I can see when I go to the Pret or Cosi in midtown and lines are out there door,as people leave their offices and head for the parks at lunchtime ! Almost as hard as trying to get a seat on the 4/5/6 during rush hour heading downtown !

For those who might like to do some work in the park did you know there are some parks that are WiFi enabled AND its free ? Sometimes we need not be tethered to our desks or offices-I try sometimes during the great weather days,to take some time and be outdoors -sometimes being able to hear the birds chirp as I do a little bit of work is extraordinarily relaxing for me....

So,here's a great list (courtesy of NYCGO ) :

  1. Bowling Green Park @ Broadway and Whitehall Street
  2. Hanover Square @ Pearl Street
  3. Union Square- East 14th street
  4. Washington Market Park @ Greenwich Street
  5. Robert F Wagner Park - Battery & 1st Places
  6. Brooklyn Bridge Park-Old Fulton & Water Street
  7. City Hall Park- Broadway and Chambers Street
  8. Bryant Park- 42nd Street btwn 5th & 6th Avenues
  9. Madison Square Park - Broadway and 23rd Street

OR do something that seems revolutionary, and against the norm-disconnect for a while.Relax, reconnect with nature, friends, read a book and just enjoy.Pack a picnic (or just pick up some lunch)  and have some downtime outside !

And yes,I'm going to follow a bit of my own advice-and take some time to enjoy the great weather today !

'til the next time.Always at your service.

Feliz Cinco de Mayo !!!

Happy Cinco de Mayo !

Over dinner last night,my dear s/o and I were discussing how often many people don't know the true significance of various holidays, for example Cinco de Mayo.He commented that on a recent business trip someone said it was about Mexican Independence. And he quickly answered, nope, because he knew that Mexican Independence day is actually September 16 !

So you might ask,why Cinco de Mayo ????

Briefly, the holiday of Cinco de Mayo (The 5th of May) commemorates the victory of the Mexican militias over the French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

Mexican Independence day,is September 16th,and they gained independence in 1821 from Spain-but as is often the case historically...periods immediately following independence can be VERY tumultous.Mexico became indebted to many nations, including Spain,England and France. When they stopped making loan payments to France, the French, eager to expand their empire decided to "call in the chips" to try to install leadership, and ultimately invaded-Span and England withdrew support realizing the invasion was imminent.

The Mexican militia compared to the French army, was outnumbered and ill-equipped BUT THEY WON!

Fast foward a few years...and how do we celebrate ? By embracing Mexican culture -enjoying food, music ,beverages and customs unique to Mexico.

How will YOU celebrate today ? Share your thoughts and pictures -would LOVE to see them !

Have a FABULOUS Wednesday.

'til the next time. Always at your service.
